Take the Hoodox Watch Local Challenge
It’s a new year, which means a new opportunity to set goals around what we watch! If you’re reading this, chances are you’re someone who wants to support local. Hopefully, you’re starting to get the hang of shopping local and eating local. Watching local, on the other hand, can be a bit trickier. That’s where Hoodox and the Watch Local Challenge come in!
These 12 challenges (designed for you to tackle one per month) will help you take a break from the streaming service giants, diversify your streaming watchlist, and share what you’re loving with your community - all while supporting local filmmakers with Hoodox!
Take the 2023 Watch Local Challenge, and keep us updated on how it’s going all year long!
1. Create your Hoodox watchlist.
Did you know that making a watchlist on Hoodox is super easy? As you browse the Hoodox library on Hoodox.tv just look for the button that says “My list” and click/tap to add a film to your watchlist!
2. Plan a night to watch Hoodox
with a group of friends (in person or virtually).
One of the best things about documentaries, especially locally relevant ones, is how they spark conversation. When you watch a film on Hoodox with a group of friends, it’s almost certain to get you talking afterwards. And who knows - you might learn something from the film AND about each other!
3. Watch No Limits during
Disability Awareness Month in March.
In No Limits: An Art Series Focused on Access for All, students from the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired work with Indianapolis arts organizations to help make art more accessible for all.
This feature film is also available with Audio Description.
4. Watch a film by a Black filmmaker.
If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help! Try these recommendations.
5. Watch a film by a Woman filmmaker.
Our Women Filmmaker category, presented by Indy Maven, is full of inspiring stories!
6. Get a Hoosier perspective of a story Beyond Indiana.
While most of the stories streaming on Hoodox are about people and places in the Hoosier state, we have a whole category of films presented by the Indianapolis International Airport that features Hoosier filmmakers telling stories from Beyond Indiana.
7. Watch a film about our waterways, then make a Clear Choices, Clean Water pledge.
Water is life. That’s probably why there are several films about Indiana rivers and streams streaming on Hoodox. Did you know you can make a big impact to our waterways by making relatively small commitments? Watch a film about our waterways on Hoodox, then check out Clear Choices, Clean Water to learn more and make a pledge!
8. Plan a Watch Local Weekend.
Give Netflix and Disney+ a break and pick a weekend to watch local. You could choose a feature film on Saturday night, or have a Sunday matinee. You could even queue up a few short films to watch all in a row.
9. Watch a student film.
There are several student films streaming on Hoodox and we’re adding more all the time. Check out the Student Film category and add one to your watchlist now!
10. Find some peace by watching a Slow Moments film.
Slow TV is basically defined as a genre of film or television in which coverage of an ordinary event is shown in its complete length, often lasting hours and hours. Winter Slow Moments: Cataract Falls and Slow Moments: Blatchley Nature Preserve aren’t hours long, but they are slow-moving, meditative short films that invite you to take a break and find some peace in two of Indiana’s beautiful natural areas.
11. Watch a film about something unfamiliar.
Many of us tend to gravitate toward the familiar - movies or shows that we relate to or that someone recommended. Challenge yourself by browsing the Hoodox library and watching a film that seems totally unfamiliar to you in every way.
12. Watch a New Release during its first week on Hoodox.
Throughout the year, we release new titles on Hoodox.
Keep an eye on the New Releases category (and your email if you’re subscribed to our list) to catch a film as soon as it drops!
